i would love to know how they can identify the composition of minerals that tiny. :X
Based on my understanding of geology, options would include:

1) Identify surrounding rock types. Beaches usually include or consist of pulverized local rocks. Look for a match between the characteristics of the sand grains and the surrounding rocks.

2) Analyze the color, texture, cleavage, streak color, hardness, and other mineral characteristics of the grains. Magnification and fine tools will be useful.

3) Look for telltale features that identify grains as coming from artificial or animal origin. Fossil grains are easy to identify. So are plastic nurds and beach glass.
Beautiful. Thank you for the link!
Hunh, who'd've thought that sand could be beautiful? Fascinating!
Wow, those are gorgeous. Thanks for posting!
