The Return of the Tasmanian Tiger ... sort of ...

According to this article, scientists have discovered a way to insert DNA from the now-extinct Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine, into a mouse embryo. While it is not yet possible to restore extinct species to life, this is an important step in that direction. This is a key reason why I support genetic engineering: when used responsibly, it can help us to repair some of the damage that humanity has done to Earth's biosphere. Let's not throw out the patch kit right when we need it most, okay?

I really WANT to do this, but the people who argue against it have a good point. I want to bring back woolly mammoths, too, but my partner makes a good argument as to why we shouldn't.
I've been following the project to restore the mammoths. I'm in favor of that for religious reasons. In terms of environmental safety ... it would probably be best to keep them contained, rather than trying to fit them back into an ecosystem that has done without them for thousands of years, even if there's a possibility that our ancestors drove them extinct.
