Who is the REAL predator in that match-up?
In terms of the food web, they both are. But in this particular match ... brains over brawn wins the day.
Yes, but was the octopus simply defending itself, or was it preying on the shark on purpose?
I'm not sure. The octopus didn't seem to go out of its way. The shark may have gotten closer than the octopus considered safe. After that, well, big hunk of fresh fish, it'd be a shame to let the whole thing go to waste.
Well! I'm glad I didn't see this video many years ago when I used to dive in Puget Sound and play with the octopuses.
They are quite formidable creatures. One of the more troublesome sea monsters in Torn World is the smartarm, which is somewhere between an octopus and a squid in shape and behavior. It tends to think of a ship as a puzzle with food inside, which then sinks to become a house.
