I have a suspicion that what Jesus Christ really wanted to get across wasn't actually "love" for thy fellow human being, but respect. Like the Unitarians of today say, a belief in "the inherent worth and dignity of every person; Justice, equity and compassion in human relations; Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations" and so on. But Christ was limited by the language of the time, and since he wanted to get his points across to as many people as possible, he was further limited by how well the common man knew the language(s), and each language has it's own limitations. But every human language has a word for love. So I suspect "love" wasn't what he *really* wanted to say, but the closest he could get to his true thoughts; because how do you love someone you don't know? You can't, not really. But you can totally respect the dignity and inherent worth of someone you've never met.
