Poem: "No Vacancy"

This poem came out of the August 2, 2011 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by prompts from aldersprig and janetmiles, then sponsored by janetmiles.  It belongs to the Monster House series.  Not everyone thinks of "monster" the same way...

No Vacancy

It was my wife who opened the door
when the witch hunters came to our house.

The lurking shadow leaned around the door
and glared at the witch hunters.
The monsters under-the-bed and in-the-closet
formed a furry wall behind my wife.
Then the bogeyman arrived, lean and pale,
causing their jaws to drop as they stared up at him.
They did not even notice our daughter's seeing-eye gremlin
urinating on their shiny black shoes.

"Sorry, we're full up on monsters right now,"
my wife said evenly.
"Try the house across the street."

I like that one. :-)
That's good to hear.
Absolutely HOWLED with delight at this one -- scared the Tribble, in fact!
It's always fun when I can make someone laugh out loud.
*chortle* Yes, yes, love it, yes, YES
*I just laughed so damned hard in the middle of my gaming session and then had to read this to my game group who all laughed their asses off too.

Thanks so much for sharing!
I'm glad I could make you laugh, followed by everyone else.
Bah ha ha!

Oh, perfect. I do like that response.

They will later. Heh.
Heh. Yeah.
I have tweeted a link to this under the title best thing ever. Because it is.
That is so sweet. I appreciate the signal boost.
BWAH HA HA HA HA! I love it!
seeing-eye gremlin

LOL! I love this series!

Reminds me a little of Lyria. All her children are artificial creatures, could be considered monsters; even the ones that look human. Meriel is part cat. Jedocas is a man-sized rat with appropriately sized cockroach wings. Arrandine is a very large and sentient dog with monkey hands he tucks under his abdomen. She has other "children" that are sentient spirits made from the souls of insects. And her apparently human staffers and soldiers, half or more of them are made from corpses; the rest are descended from individuals who used to be corpses.

Oh yeah, and Lyria's lab is full of imps. Even the fortress itself is alive.

What a fascinating family!
If you don't already, you should make a tag for the monster house poems.
My tag list is already huge; I'm reluctant to add more tags in a category that would involve a lot of expansion, as the serials would. I've been using the "Serial Poetry" page as a guide so that people can find all the poems in a series, and I try to link that to the series poems.
I had a thought about this series last night: Does the blind girl use her magical eye pendant at school? If so, what do her teachers think of it? I can see it being difficult to explain being blind and somehow able to read regular writing, too.

Or does she get homeschooled by the monsters?
