Genderfixing Comics

Here is a thoughtful and detailed look at why the commercial comics industry doesn't appeal to women, and why that would be difficult to fix.

I think -- if you want strong female characters, a respectful tone, nonsexist plots, female writers/artists, etc. -- you are better off looking at independent comics and/or webcomics.  There is more freedom and better content there.  Vote with your feet, your eyeballs, and your dollars.  Look for projects you like, and support them.  I recommend [personal profile] wonder_city which is webfic rather than webcomic, but a superhero soap opera with awesome gender dynamics and other diversity.  Girl Genius is a favorite webcomic.

Don't see what you want?  Go to the Crowdfunding community on Dreamwidth or LiveJournal and see if you can rustle up interest in launching a new project -- an especially good approach if you can afford to sponsor such a thing, but don't have all the skills to create it.

Some writers and artists are much more female-friendly than others. I think they deserve to attract audiences accordingly.

There are many different branches of manga, each with its own tropes. Some have a very particular audience, so there are girl styles and boy styles and so forth. But there's also a surprising amount of crossover -- girls who read mecha stories and boys who read about magical girls, etc. I think that's cool.
That's actually a pretty accurate description of the American comics industry in the Fifties and early Sixties: a wide variety of styles covering the whole range of genre fiction. I figure it changed to all-superheroes for a reason, but I don't know why. Maybe it's time for American comics to step back out into a larger world?
That would be a nice shift.
The ferritt is an excellent writer.
Much of the stuff he comes up here on LJ should be earning him money elsewhere.
:)
That would be nice. However, in my observation, the smarter you are, the sharper your opinions, and the farther from the sheepmemes you are, the less people want to hear from you and the lower your chances of selling. Best bets are niche markets where you can find audiences who are sick of the everyday bleating that fills the culturesphere.
Some days I'd just about swear there's a media conspiracy to dumb down the US public...
:[

A discontiguous conspiracy, perhaps. Just a few large corporations own almost all the American media now, and thus control what information most people consume. Those companies aren't inclined to publish news that makes them, or big business, look bad. Ignorant people are more easily led in some ways ... at least until they form a mob, which they are more prone to do than educated people, and there is no controlling a mob. And if ignorant people get an idea into their heads, no amount of facts is likely to remove it. Ever. This can be a problem, but strangely, people rarely foresee that. They just like being able to herd sheeple.

It doesn't require the collaborative, conscious effort of a true conspiracy to create such effects. You just need a bunch of people who benefit from doing the same things.
You have summed it up perfectly.
But it goes farther and deeper than that.
I think it includes our public school system as well.
:[
It does. The public education system is largely influenced by business and politics, and somewhat by religion. It was originally modeled after factories, but in modern times, is shifting the model more towards prisons (which can also be for-profit now). This is not good.
