California Bans Styrofoam Containers

California is the first state to place a ban on styrofoam food containers used for take-out and similar purposes.  It will first affect restaurants and stores, then schools.  A number of cities have already banned such containers, as they take a long time to break down and can harm wildlife.  I'm pleased to see this; there are plenty of other materials for such containers, including paper which can be sustainably produced.

Some restaurants I frequent (I live in California), have already abandoned sytrofoam for more environmentally friendly containers. They've also abandoned plastic bags in which to carry your containers home. Many, including places like Red Lobster, have opted for plain, unprinted, brown paper bags now.
Plastic bag bans are spreading too. I prefer charging a fee or deposit for those, myself. We mostly use reusable shopping bags now, but when we forget to bring those in, we save the plastic ones for reuse as trash bags. I'd rather not have to pay premium prices for trash bags.
I love plastic grocery bags.
They're incredibly easy to carry when walking a mile or more,
and I reuse them as garbage bags.

But for restaurant take out, no, I wouldn't endorse them.
Hmmm...

Most "cloth" grocery bags are crap,
often made of a pressed felted polyester.
And the stitching is shoddy.
And the straps are inadequate.

I discovered there wasn't much of a market for handmade denim purses,
but maybe decent cloth tote bags?

Hmmm...
The quality of reusable bags does vary greatly. We've found Wal-mart's recycled poly-plastic bags to be quite durable. Some stores sell canvas ones that are really sturdy.

Yes, there's a market for sturdy fabric bags, at least in some places. I've seen them sold as craft items, and you can find patterns online or in a store.
One of the ways that you know you're outside the Portland city limits is when someone hands you a styrofoam container. :)
That little detail is just begging to be written into a story as local color.
I like styrofoam cups at home,
but I don't know of any coffee house that uses them here.
The Starbucks-style coated paper with cardboard insulator ring
seems to be the industry standard. In coffee, at least.
I knew this was only a matter of time.

I was always ambivalent about places that sent home plastic containers. It can't be more sustainable, but on the other hand I almost always saved them for other purposes. I have right by me a take out box from a little Chinese place in Carrboro, NC. It's full of all my needle felting tools and made it all the way to Germany with me. Two others of the same are serving duty with my Grandma right now.

In Germany, we still use plastic bags but you have to pay a small fee for them (in order to motivate you NOT to use them). I often do buy them, but they're well made and so darned useful around the place.
Unfortunately, it's not going into effect for 5 years, so there's plenty of time for it to get repealed or watered down.
