Do you have any idea what variety of peony you have?
I recently found a peony sprouting amongst the leaves I spread underneath our apple tree. I got busy with my knife and buried pieces of peony root in eleven different pots. I now have peonies coming up in 9 of the eleven.
I intend on calling them either "Trashy Red" or "Trashy Pink" since they arrived here in a trashbag full of leaves.

Something old; they've been here for decades. I'm not sure if even my mother planted them. They may have come with the house.
It's quite possible. Peony clumps have often thrived for decades without human interference.
Did you inherit your house from your mom?

This is the house where I grew up. My parents still own it, but I live here.
