It sucks.
Amazon hoards all the advantages, leaving the disadvantages to the writer (who is considered the publisher). Amazon does not promise to protect your work from copyright infringement. The contract can be interpreted to allow others to create derivative works from yours with no recompense to you.
You waive the right to sue Amazon for anything except money allegedly owed to you by Amazon but not paid properly.
There's more, but those are some of the main deal breakers.
It's very disappointing, because Amazon has the potential to be so hugely useful, and they're making themselves very unattractive. The first thing I did when I heard about the Kindle was go check the contract to see if this would be an appealing market for my deadzone fiction. It wasn't.
