He claims he was only joking, and refuses to apologize on those grounds.
He's a 91-year-old freshman representative
who served in Europe during WWII,
although I'm not at all sure which army that was in.

Wow, that started my day with a huge jawdrop to the floor.

Not only did he defend his statements, he called his constituent a "little girl". Then, when he had a chance to back away from it when probed by the media, he basically said, "screw you guys, I served in WW2, I have more rights than you do."

And there are people defending his "right to speak his mind," failing to account for the fact that he is a paid representative of the people and his opinion belongs to those people who pay him to represent them.
He has a right to his dumbass opinion. He has a right to speak his dumbass opinion. I am glad for the latter, because it reveals the former. Hopefully his constituents will realize that they have elected someone who does not value them very much, and will boot him out of office posthaste.

and that would explain the Republicans attitude towards health care; "don't get sick, and if you do then hurry up and die.".

Seriously though, they're becoming more and more fascist.
"Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it." Can't find the attribution but it is something I have heard most of my life.

I just keep wondering when the last straw will hit the fan and start the conflagration. (Yes, I am mixing metaphors, but it seems to be somewhat appropriate.) I can't decide if I want to be around to watch the circus or be happily dead. Whenever it happens, though, it is going to make every prior protest and riot look like a petty display of crankiness.
wikiquote attributes "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
to George Santayana, with the observation that it's been paraphrased many times.
Okay, if you won't read the Union Leader article,
perhaps you'll read the Concord Monitor article
http://www.concordmonitor.com/article/245163/lawmaker-advocates-eugenics?page=0,0

or at least notice this part-
"He's shown signs of great confusion in committee in terms of House process and content," said Rep. Marilinda Garcia, a Salem Republican who serves with Harty on the House Legislative Administration Committee.

Rep. Jon Richardson, an Allenstown Republican on the Legislative Administration Committee, said he does not condone Harty's comments on any level, but he takes into account the fact that Harty is a World War II veteran in his 90s.

"In our committee . . . he is constantly confused, easily swayed, hard of hearing, and prone to offer up unrelated commentary or go off on unrelated tangents," Richardson said.

Now take a moment to ask yourself if addictinginfo.org
qualifies as a reliable source,
quoting a man whom colleagues have discribed in this way
without mentioning these facts?
Did they not read the article they quoted from,
or were they hoping that I wouldn't?
I say we add him to the list of defective people. The TOP of the list.
Apparently he really is defective.
One hopes that his shocking comments are not lost in the coverage of the tragedy in Japan, and that in the next election, people remember.

Follow up in the Concord has the Republican party officially condemning his position, and distancing themselves from him.
>>Follow up in the Concord has the Republican party officially condemning his position, and distancing themselves from him.<<

Well, that's encouraging.

It probably won't be in my lifetime but SOMEDAY the karmic payback for the rich and the entitled and the oblivious (who were always "only joking" about things that are not joking matter when caught saying or doing something they shouldn't) is coming and it's going to be EPIC.
A version I've heard fairly often is that such a person is liable to get reincarnated as a poor black lesbian in a wheelchair.

We did not choose Stalin as an ally.

That's good news!

With this, he earned back some of the points he lost with me. I can respect someone for recognizing when he's trying to work beyond his limits and backing down rather than make things worse.
