This Is Where the Money Goes

If you're wondering why America is having money trouble, this chart balances recent cuts against recent gifts.  Consider who benefits, and how much, and how many.  Talk about irresponsible spending -- apparently America considers luxuries more important than keeping the lights on and food on the table.

When I saw the title of this post, I imagined, for some reason, a child's illustrated book explaining the economy, only the one page of it I saw in my head said, "...and this is where the money goes... (turn page) ...into a pit so nobody knows... (next page) ...we hoard it in this nice big hole... (next page) ...so poor people filthy leave us alone."

On a more serious note, I read a couple of interesting things:

Just as the saying goes, "the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn't exist."

Tax breaks are expenditures. Every break and every loophole is money spent. Ask any (legitimate, unbiased) economist.

But they've managed to frame the discussion so that tax breaks are the universal solution to whatever ails the top 1%, and they are completely different from spending money on addressing the crap the rest of us poor lot have to deal with.
Actually, what really struck me about these numbers is that none of them, including those evil "tax breaks for the rich," were big enough to put even a small dent in the national deficit.
We'd have to address the immense and often undocumented amount of money we throw at the military-industrial complex before we we ever got around to solving the deficit.

So, yea, not gonna happen.
Military spending is overblown, and they're still doing a piss-poor job of actually caring for the troops. Pay is lousy, benefits patchy, and personal equipment not always what it should be. I think those are better places to spend money than the gazillion-dollar nuclear weapons, jets, and some other stuff that blow big chunks of money. If your guys are worn out or poorly prepared, it doesn't matter what gee-whizmos you have, chances are you're going to get your ass handed to you.
