Poetry Fishbowl on Tuesday, March 1

This is an advance announcement for the Tuesday, March 1 2011 Poetry Fishbowl. This time the theme will be "Things With Wings."  I'll be soliciting ideas for winged wildlife, fairies, angels, flying aliens, winged monsters, artificial wings, flying machines, things with other types of "wings" such as buildings or maple seeds, plots that involve flight, examples of "winging it," aerial habitats, other places where wings might be found, settings where wings are irrelevant or awkward, the limitations of flight, and poetic forms in particular.

If you're interested, mark the date on your calendar, and please hold actual prompts until the "Poetry Fishbowl Open" post next week. Meanwhile, if you want to help with promotion, please feel free to link back here or repost this on your blog.

Writing is usually considered a solitary pursuit. One exception to this is a fascinating exercise called a "fishbowl." This has various forms, but all of them basically involve some kind of writing in public, usually with interaction between author and audience. A famous example is Harlan Ellison's series of "stories under glass" in which he sits in a bookstore window and writes a new story based on an idea that someone gives him. Writing classes sometimes include a version where students watch each other write, often with students calling out suggestions which are chalked up on the blackboard for those writing to use as inspiration.

I'm going to host a Poetry Fishbowl on my blog on Tuesday, March 1. I'll be soliciting ideas for thematic characters, objects, plots, settings, and poetic forms in particular. Chances are I'll spend a good chunk of the day, from afternoon to evening or more, alternating between this site and doing stuff offline so my back doesn't weld itself to the chair. I will post at least one of the resulting fishbowl poems on the blog for everyone to enjoy, and an extra one if there's at least one new prompter or donor. The rest will be available for audience members to buy, and whatever's left over will go into my archive for magazine submission.

If you enjoy my poetry -- or if you just love poetry in general, or want to promote interest in wings and flight -- please mark the fishbowl date on your calendar. Drop by and give me some ideas, comment on the posted poetry, encourage people to come look, whatever tickles your fancy. I hope to see you then!

You realize, if you don't elaborate on "dragon" (doing what?) on Tuesday, I'm liable to stuff you into a peasant blouse and depict you dancing around a dragon nest all excited like that. ;)

(I also have fan artists, which rocks)

Okay, I'll be good until Tuesday. At which point I shall be babbling about wings more.

:-D
Charnanigans drew it; it's a picture of a character in my serial (he borked up the shapechanging thing).
.... >.> I'd draw that!
Ooohhhh..this is right up my alley! :) I already have ideas for poetry prompts. :) Could I use one of my recent poems as a prompt? It kinda ties in with the theme. :)

Also, I started reading "Prismatica" and I am hooked! You will be receiving a most pleasant review from me. <3

I don't know how well that will work. Sometimes poem chaining works great, other times not. I'm willing to give it a try.

W00T! I'm delighted that you are enjoying my book so much. I very much look forward to your review.
Hmm...you have a good point there. I'm very interested in what you could come up with after having read my poem, but I think I'll stick to images. Can I submit more than one poetry prompt?

I have two images that would be perfect for this poetry fishbowl. :)

You can submit multiple prompts for the poetry fishbowl, as images or text or whatever you like. I'm pretty flexible.
How about a playlist of songs? :) I've always found music to be deeply inspiring to my writing endeavors. :) I also have a couple of Pandora stations if you're interested. :)
I can't write poetry with music playing. The beat overrides my internal sense of rhythm (in a metered poem) or cadence (in an unmetered poem). That's kind of a nuisance during the fishbowls, because Doug likes to play music while doing the dishes.

Funny, I never thought to mention this before, in the context of fishbowls. This is the first time it's come up. I think I'll add it (and the books) to the landing page as things to avoid.

Thanks for the insight!
Okay...that's cool! :) It's interesting to hear about what does or does not work for authors. :) In any case, I am mailing you a photo that may give you some inspiration (though I don't know if it will arrive in time for this Tuesday) and another picture that I'll submit next week. :) I'm excited!
