A Review of Zoo City

Based on the cover image and review, this seems like an interesting book.

Zoo City is urban fantasy that actually earns that label: it's fantasy in the gritty, urban environment of Johannesburg, South Africa. It's set in our world -- almost. Some time in the 1990s, the Zoo Plague, or "Acquired Aposymbiotic Familiarism," manifested worldwide.

Thank you, Elizabeth!
I had this in my wishlist for a while, but looking for it on Amazon after reading your post I saw that now it is available for Europe as a Kindle book.
I bought it immediately after reading the sample, it's exactly the kind of urban fantasy I love. :)
When I saw the review on my Friends page, I figured this book would appeal to some of my audience. I wouldn't mind reading it myself too.
If you want to try it out asap you can download the free kindle app for PC and the book sample (samples are 10% of the full book).

This option has helped me find interesting books and avoid impulse-buying quite a few that would have been duds.
1. I am vaguely reminded of the daemons in the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman.

2. For some reason, before I had a better idea of what the zoo plague was by clicking the link, I was reminded of an idea I had once for a story: a world where all animals can understand one another, including humans. The idea was from watching a Disney movie with talking animals and thinking, "You know, if all the animals in the world really did talk, that would make for some interesting consequences." I imagined how difficult it would be to hunt, kill, and eat animals for food if they could beg for their lives, and tell me about their families. I think if I lived on that world, I'd go back to being a vegetarian.
