Poem: "Eyesight, Insight, Gunsight"

This poem came out of the February 9, 2011 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired and sponsored by janetmiles.

Eyesight, Insight, Gunsight

What the eye sees are shapes:
heads and torsos, arms and legs.

What the mind sees are people:
allies and enemies scrambling in the distance.

What the gun sees are targets:
arc and altitude, focus and range ... bullseye.

It is up to us to decide
which vision to follow.

The gun does not see.
Arc and windage, flight perturbed... hit, miss. No difference

Draw swift the arrow,
Nock it, trace its length
To thy target,
Lift, feel the wind,
The trees' motion at thine eye's edge
Trace the arc within thy mind
Draw back the bow
Know its tension.

You have seen the flight already.
The tip is death.

Draw again before thou draw breath,

Every draught of straightened stick
A single motion leading to death.

Thou hast seen the arrow
With its own eye.
