Read about "Poetry in the Empire"

My article "Poetry in the Empire" is now posted in Torn World.  This is what I call "demi-fiction" -- nonfiction about a fictional setting.  The article describes different customs and concepts regarding Southern poetry.  If you are a registered member, you'll be able to see the first paragraph, which includes some of the vocabulary in Torn Tongue.  If you're a contributor, then you can see the whole article, with explanations and more vocabulary.

I like the demi-fiction idea. :-)

I've been plotting an Encyclopedia Callanthica for my fictional setting (the one where they ride goatlike things).

That sounds cool.

One thing I like about Torn World is the opportunity to write demi-fiction. We have a nice archive of references built up already, although many are locked for registered members or contributors.

*nods* it sounds very intriguing! Mine started as wanting to catalog all the worldbuilding I've been doing somehow.

You should drop by sometime and check it out. I think you'd enjoy Torn World.

*laugh* I know how that goes. My desert vocabulary started as a few words for a story, and then ... grew.

*grins* Yes! I kept getting stuck on little things: "Wait, do they /have/ Mayors?"

(I'm still not sure about the Mayors. But I know how their names work and their general elasticities and what their farmers do and what their soldiers wear...)

We hit that a lot in Torn World too. We don't want to port over too much English slang. So we often adapt local metaphors ("By all that is licensed!" and "Oh, frass!") or just choose different terminology ("monitor" instead of "police officer"). We also have the Torn Tongue vocabulary available, so writers have a choice of saying firolk or hexball, and so forth.
