My mom is in a heavily female-dominated area, and she's still going nuts in Academia. Part of it is gender issues, most of it is that Academia doesn't really seem to care much about either doing good research *or* about teaching the next generation of academia, but instead just about politics and making people feel good about themselves.
It's a lot like court politics. Feh.
Pretty much why I left the university system.
I've heard similar sentiments from a number of people.
As someone who's knocked around more colleges than she cares to admit to, I greatly agree. If you've chosen your field wisely, a female will find greater freedom and better pay out in industry.
