Oh man, that last line of the second verse!

So, was it the shrinking that caused the problems, or just making griffins in the first place?

Hmm...

Based on the original story, the problem started with full-sized griffins because the biologies aren't very compatible. In essence, miniaturizing them made everything worse. From what I know of biology, if you breed for size then you have to put that ahead of things like hardiness. It causes problems. Even if you ratchet back and forth, it's challenging.

So do I. I do that pretty much habitually. I know all kinds of odd details about some of the species in my main fantasy setting.
