Poem: "Petty Problems"

This poem was inspired by a prompt from ladyqkat directing my attention to certain posts by ladysprite.  I am well pleased to discover these, and hope I have done them justice in this poem.

Petty Problems

The Faerie Queen's court is bright and gay ...
With pets less than simple, so they say.

Seven years' service seemed a small price
For a scholarship and good advice.

Little I knew of the things I'd face,
Serving as vet to the faerie race.

A jackalope with a broken horn,
A parlor-maid's missing unicorn,

A troll complaining about his goats,
A centaur sick from feeling his oats,

A werewolf suffering from a cough,
A basilisk's claw near falling off,

Teacup griffins that eat their own legs,
Emergencies with cracked dragon eggs --

Is it any wonder I've gone spare,
Trying to balance the here and There?

Though they're petty problems, to be sure,
The hell they make of my days is pure.

I know that all jobs have parts that suck,
But on sabbat-eves, I curse my luck.

The city's no place for faerie kin,
But some of them love it, and stay in.

How could I blame them?  I live here too.
In faerie land, I'm just passing through.

My time near done, She asks if I'll stay,
Or part with Magic.  What could I say?

I choose my hopes, instead of my fears.
"Yes, Your Majesty.  Seven more years."

More Poem Love!

LOL! Love it!

A centaur sick from feeling his oats,

...

Teacup griffins that eat their own legs,

Chortling here! It's been a really good day for you so far!

Re: More Poem Love!

Okay, I totally want a teacup griffin. I'd take very good care of him and name him Chauncey.

This is one that'd make for an interesting novel to read in prose. };)

Well...

For that you must petition ladysprite herself, but I agree with you completely. I would love to read such a book.

Re: Well...

Try _The Magic And The Healing_ by Nick O'Donohoe for similar themes, done differently but well.

Okay...

This led to another poem, "The Teacup Griffin," a sad little free-verse portrait of what happens when people breed for appearance over performance.

The poem wriggles enticingly under your paws, but fails to escape.

That's adorable, thank you. :)

Oh wow.

Me, I'd be leaving. But clearly vets are made of sterner stuff to begin with.

And great rhyme.

....wow.

This has made my day - thank you so much for writing it! It's beautiful, I love it, and I love the idea that my little drabbles could inspire something so sweet and wonderful.

Thank you!

You're welcome!

I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. There's another one based on your work and a picture, here:

I really enjoyed reading your stories. They are quite good -- and I've worked as a professional editor, just so you know where my standards are. I heartily encourage you to write more, and I think you'd do well trying this as a crowdfunded project. If that appeals, check out crowdfunding for ideas.
