Poem: "Suburban Bogeymen"

This poem was inspired and sponsored by aldersprig.  It's a creepy little piece about how magical creatures can adapt to modern contexts.

Suburban Bogeymen
-- a triolet

Suburbia is pretty on the surface of its streets
But still it has its bogeymen, their magic new and strange ...
And evil lies in waiting, with a bag of poisoned sweets.
Suburbia is pretty on the surface of its streets
It fools unwary visitors who taste its tempting treats.
The bogeymen are pushers now, but their goals never change
Suburbia is pretty on the surface of its streets
But still it has its bogeymen, their magic new and strange.

I like the bogeymen-to-pushers analogy, and now I'm picturing dealers with orc tusks lurking in housing tracts...

...

ever wonder about those dead-end driveways in housing tracts that never seem to get finished?

That is creepy, all the more so for its ring of truth.

Yes...

I got to thinking about the similarity between addictive drugs and enchanted food. It seemed too obvious for the darkfey to miss the opportunity of combining the two...

Yes...

Sometimes the truth is scarier than fiction, and people don't like to look at it.

Before the mention of "pushers," I was getting a "bogeymen pretend to be child molesters" vibe.

That is a whole nother flavor of creepy.

Re: 0_o

Well it kinda makes sense. If bogeymen eat children, they'd probably lure them in the way serial child molesters do.

Re: 0_o

That's one way to do it, yeah.

Re: 0_o

Although, with magic at their disposal they could pose as the parents, too.

Reminds me of a "creepypasta" story: When my friend was about 4, she heard her mother's voice calling to her from the kitchen. she was making her way down the hall that leads to the kitchen, when someone pulled her into the closet, covering her mouth so she wouldn't make any sounds. it was her mom, whispering "Honey, stay in here with me. I heard it, too." http://kc-anathema.livejournal.com/2662675.html
