Poem: "The Lines We Draw"

This poem came out of the September 7, 2010 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by a prompt from jenny_evergreen.  It was sponsored by laffingkat as part of the 2010 Holiday Poetry Sale.  Merry Chrismahanakwanzika to you!

The Lines We Draw
-- a rondeau

The lines we draw are more than marks in sand;
They are the boundaries of mind and hand.
These are the lines dividing "we" from "they" --
Humanity itself is what we say,
But who indeed belongs to this blessed band?

What traits define the ground on which we stand?
How good is good enough, how grand too grand
To count as human, or perhaps to sway
The lines we draw?

Mutations and anomalies command
Attention as we strive to name our brand.
Genetics is the game we all must play;
We throw the dice and hope to win the day,
Yet not be forced to think or to expand
The lines we draw.
