Expensive Television

When I was younger, television was free.  You had to buy the TV set, but after that, the content just arrived through the air.  Then along came cable, and the satellite companies, and all that jazz.  TV became something with a monthly fee, which went up and up.  Apparently now it's expensive enough that a lot of people can't afford TV service.  I hadn't really thought about that, although it's been several years since we could afford it.  On the one hand, it sucks that people are getting blocked out of media access.  On the other hand, the media itself pretty much sucks; finding worthwhile news on TV is all but impossible, and even historic stuff or entertainment requires a fair bit of hunting to find something watchable.  So maybe it's not such a great loss.  People can go back to finding other things to do with their time.
