Read "Susan 3342 AD"

I recommend the SF story "Susan 3342 AD" by Marge Simon.  It's a fascinating piece of genderfic.

>>I am reminded of the episode where Riker falls in love with a hermaphrodite, her people's attitude toward split-sexed people was similar.<<

I liked the storyline, though not the ending. Star Trek has a very bad habit of wussing out of touchy issues. However, that does make it an excellent plot line for writers who are made of sterner stuff and willing to cross those borders into interesting new territory.

>>On Traipah, one occasionally gets mutants like that, people of just one physical gender. <<

Fascinating!
Indeed. How long was the franchise running? Well into the 00bs, and not a single gay character. The closest they got to touching LGBTQ issues was the episode of DS9 where Dax and her wife from a previous host had a brief fling. First (technically) lesbian kiss on Star Trek. And the Intendant was apparently bisexual, but nothing more than suggestions ever came of that.
