I am reminded of the episode where Riker falls in love with a hermaphrodite, her people's attitude toward split-sexed people was similar.
On Traipah, one occasionally gets mutants like that, people of just one physical gender. The mate of one of the historical characters was born without a grahbihn (the male bit). But it doesn't cause a huge problem, these mutants, because on Traipah, gender is just another part of one's personality; some people act more feminine, others more masculine. And there are so many complicated combos of masculine and feminine traits there.

I liked the storyline, though not the ending. Star Trek has a very bad habit of wussing out of touchy issues. However, that does make it an excellent plot line for writers who are made of sterner stuff and willing to cross those borders into interesting new territory.
