Moment of Silence: Arthur C. Clarke

Arthur C. Clarke has left this world. I wish him good voyage, and fair landing among the aliens whom he wished would contact us.

Messenger in a Bottle:
Elegy for Arthur C. Clarke

If you’re holding this, Explorer,
You’re holding the pride of Terra.
Let me tell you about him.

He was one of the greatest storytellers
Our species has ever produced.
Some of them came true.

He wanted three things:
Lasting peace in Sri Lanka,
Clean energy on Earth,
And word from you that you exist.

He sent this, a piece of himself,
Into the ocean of space,
Perhaps to be reborn,
Our messenger in a bottle.

Please treasure him as we did.

Superb beautiful poem. I am grateful you shared it.
I'm glad you liked it.

I have found LJ an ideal place to share my elegies of public figures.
For those of you who are fans of my poetry -- this is one of my specialties. I never know when I'll get tapped to write down one of them. They just come to me, or don't. And I've been doing this since I was little, for members of my family and other people I knew or knew of.

Important hint: if someone gives you a piece of elegiac poetry at a visitation, don't put it anywhere in the receiving line. It can create a bottleneck. Put it on a side table or with other memorabilia.
