But the problem isn't actually religious zealots.
It's political opportunists inciting the trouble.
What I find is that zealots will eventually work themselves up to action if they aren't already. All it requires is the opportunity to set themselves in motion; political types who provide such an opportunity are starting a deadly engine which will eventually chew them up as well if they don't leap on and ride it.
Fireworks factory looking for a match.

Tcha, you'd think none of them had ever watched "The Roadrunner."
To be fair, unless you're talking about the Wile E. Coyote cartoons, neither have I.
Yes. Specifically what happens when the supergenius puts a match to, well, anything.
I'm fairly certain that if you look carefully,
you will always find irreligious leaders exploiting the zealots,
and inducing them to disregard their own beliefs for political purposes.
The individuals who carried out the WTC attack
were demonstrably not devout moslems,
and the christians opposing the rights of moslems,
as well as the rights of homosexuals and transsexuals,
are doing so in ways that are not at all christian.
Zealotry is not limited to religion, and typically distorts one's view of the world (and/or one's religion) in any case.
Political zealots using religion as a convenient tool are still zealots. They believe passionately in promoting their own cause at all costs, and they don't mind hurting people in the process.
