The New Oil Rig Fire in the Gulf

This article provides some details about Thursday's oil rig fire.  I really hope this contributes to shutting down offshore drilling in favor of switching to a safer, cleaner energy supply.  It would suck for Gaia to reach for the next bigger hammer.

It won't. If anything, we're going to keep going to more and more risky sources, because oil's getting more and more scarce. We won't change until oil becomes too expensive. And then we'll be attempting to change our energy infrastructure in the middle of a depression caused by high energy prices. It'll be a real clusterfuck.
You are probably right, but I can still try to encourage people to address the problem before it becomes fatally insoluble.
