Poem: "Reading the Mountains"

This poem came out of the August 3, 2010 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was prompted by siege and sponsored out of general funds in the poetry poll.

Reading the Mountains

The young spacers laugh,
but the old ones know better.

They say you can see a world's future
written in the folds of its crust.
What colony wouldn't want to peek
at its outcome before setting forth?
They pay good money for maps
and interpreters.

Go ahead and mock if you will,
but the bones of the world
know what it's coming to.

I look forward to seeing the book "Geophrenology of Earth", though I wonder if reading it will do us any good at this point.
Some people pay attention to the Earth. *ponder* Since Earth has mountains that run in different directions in different continents, all helter-skelter, that could suggest a lot of conflicts and mixed-mind disagreement.
