I distrust this. I know the long conversations I've had with guy friends, trying to parse "tone" across the gender lines, and it's not that simple. Add in cultural/regional variations and you've added even more complexity.
You're right that politeness varies across different subgroups.

However, some people don't really have the sense of it that most folks do. They don't particularly mean to be rude, they just can't perceive the lines that other folks use as guides. So for them, even a so-so tonechecker will probably improve their delivery.

Basically I'd recommend it for people who often find others accusing them of rude messages when they have no idea what they said that was so offensive.
*giggle* Okay, I accept your point. I know people who come off that way without meaning to, IRL and online.
