Hmmm... Well, the thing is that these critters serve as metaphors and vehicles for exploring troubling issues. It's not so much about finding a new critter, but finding a new issue.

Vampires = sexuality, lust
Werewolves = all of the above plus bestial nature of humanity and/or life transformations (such as puberty)
Robots/mutants = the dangers of science
Aliens = xenophobia
Giant radioactive monsters = nuclear proliferation
(Note: movies about invading aliens and radioactive monsters were really popular during much of the Cold War era but tapered off as time went by)
Zombies = consumerism, inevitability of death, science gone bad

Since vampires, werewolves top the list, I'd say we're still dealing with our sexual hangups cinematically. I don't see that changing much soon. :p

However, zombies and robots are duking it out for third place showing some concerns about the role technology plays in our lives.
I think zombies also represent the corporate drones and fear of "sleepwalking through life."

Someone should totally start making basilisk movies to manifest the fear of our actions wiping out life on Earth.

Good point about 'cubicle zombies'. :p

As for the latter point, how 'bout vengeful angels? The recent film Legion had a nice eschatological feel to it.

Edited to add link to film trailer.
That looks very disturbing.

I'm generally fond of angel/demon stories. One of my stories currently in progress involves a gay angel, and some serious damage to heaven.
It wasn't all that bad, but I expected more from it.

Angels messing things up: yeah, that's a very interesting theme, especially when we consider them the things that are supposed to be looking after us, a power we count upon turning against us. Hmmmm...

Have you see Dogma?
*laugh* Yes, I liked Dogma. I also liked Agents of Light and Darkness.
Recommended reading, then? :)
