Poem: "Mental Iterations"

This poem was inspired by a prompt from xjenavivex and it is today's freebie. See a scrapbooked version of this poem.

Mental Iterations

It took a long time,
but at last the search for neurotypical normality
ran aground on the need for flexibility.

Our explorations showed us
that what we perceived as mental illnesses
were in fact iterations.

We discovered that only the bipolar
can become starpilots,
able to navigate through hyperspace and subspace
at different times in the cycle.

We discovered that only individuals on the autistic spectrum
can handle the cybercortex well enough
to interface brain and computer directly
without damaging either one.

We discovered that only dysphoria
holds the key to shapeshifting --
otherwise the indelible body image
overrides the nanites' programming.

As science scampered forward
through discovery after discovery,
dragging society along by the heels,
eventually we learned that neurodiversity is necessary
if we wish to explore the universe

and not remain the meek
who inherit only the Earth.
