Following Christ

Wow.  Somebody actually paid attention to that "love thy neighbor" thing.  I am impressed!  I bet Jesus is too.  Love is a lot harder than hate.

I've met a handful of people who actually follow the teachings of Christ.  Not many ... but they're all worth knowing.  I bet these folks would be too.

You know, as a gay Christian, I'm honestly not sure what I think about this. On the one hand, it is good that they've had a change of heart and conscience--both for the rest of the world's sake and for their own souls' sake. It's also good that their penance for homophobia is public, because only public penance and contrition will even begin to heal the harm that churches have caused their LGBT members.

On the other, I can't help but bristle a little at this, because it just seems like one more way for straight Christians to assuage their own hurt and upset and get cookies from queer folks--and queer Christians in particular. I do not at all doubt these folks' contrition or their good intentions, and I do think they're doing good work. I just wish that people would also pay attention to the work that queer Christians are doing to change our churches, which is often a lot more damaging physically, emotionally and physically than making a public apology.

*sigh*

Regardless, I'd have talked to them kindly and prayed with them if they'd shown up at my Pride this June.
