I am less likely to comment on just a news post.

I like to comment on things that interest me - crafts, gardening, writing, occasionally religion...

I have not posted a lot lately, as life has been zany and busy and has that "this is not interesting to anyone but me" feeling to it. However, your recent post on reviving LJ has me reconsidering that. I really LOVE the interaction in LJ, and don't use other social networks (I'm deleting my Facebook as I don't use it and don't like their privacy policies).

I actually have a second LJ for writing and gaming stuff (which I made so I would not clutter people's friends lists) but I use it so seldom that I may try to migrate the posts and delete the account.

At minimum, a weekly "personal update" post can keep a blog going. A weekly anchor post helps make a blog solid. Any amount of newsbits or links help boost the activity level to something that will hold people's attention. When I have more time, I post a lot; when I'm really busy, people get basically a newsfeed punctuated by "here's what is eating my time right now" and very occasional anchors.

Re: Thoughts

For the "what I am doing now" posts, I lock my LJ. I keep those friends-only. But then, I don't blog here to have a following, at least not currently.

Not sure what I would do for newsfeed-ish stuff, as I mostly just lurk on a lot of publishing blogs, as I try to keep up with current trends for work.

Re: Thoughts

Well, what news to post depends on your audience. Publishing news is really popular in my LJ for obvious reasons. You might link to posts on gardening or crafts or whatever you find interesting.

With this and reviving LJ in mind (and your gender post, and my blathering response to it): http://lissa-dora.livejournal.com/650574.html

Re: Thoughts

As one of your followers... we like publishing stuff. Can't speak for Brother though ;-)
