Poem: "Log Rhythms" - The Wordsmith's Forge

Poem: "Log Rhythms"

This poem came out of the May 11, 2010 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by a prompt from janetmiles ... who also contributed to the construction by explaining how the equations would look in words rather than numbers.  She wanted something to help remember some of the logarithm rules.  She also sponsored the resulting verses.

Log Rhythms

The logarithm base is b
Of number x, the power to
Which number b must be raised up
So as to equal x, it's true.

Assume that x, y, a, and b
Are positive and full of fun.
Assume that letters a and b
Will never stand for number 1.

If log base a of x is N
That means that a to N is x
And that is where the game begins
If you remember all the specs.

If log x equals N that means
10 to the N must equal x.
It sounds quite simple, sitting here,
But try it while you're having sex.

If natural log x is N,
That means e to the N is x,
And natural's the way to be
When playing games with x and e.

Log base a of x-over-y
Must equal log base a of x
Minus the log base a of y
Says Quotient, whose lines curve and flex.
