xjenavivex tipped me to this fascinating article about the continuing search for life away from Earth.

Speaking as biologist who has been more than a little fascinated by this very subject since before I got my degree, I've come to three conclusions:

1] Wherever it is possible life will exist.
2] Our comprehension of what is possible is woefully insufficient.
3] Some forms of life we wouldn't recognise even if we were looking right at them.

Yes...

>>1] Wherever it is possible life will exist.
2] Our comprehension of what is possible is woefully insufficient.<<

I have found life to be infinitely adaptable and creative. There is far more to it than we have seen on this one little planet.

>>3] Some forms of life we wouldn't recognise even if we were looking right at them.<<

Well, of course, considering the prevalence of airborne microbes! Too often people expect life to look like what they've already seen. They don't see what is there.

I so want to explore Titan and Europa and other places in our solar system where life might exist. I don't care if it's microbial life. Sure, something more advanced would be tremendous fun, but I'd be excited by microbes anyhow.

It has been speculated that some forms of motion in highly active gas plasma might be a form of life or pre-life, which is a rather interesting concept. It is born, grows, consumes, respires, occasionally reproduces, and eventually dies away -- but everything happens as part of the dance of energy and gas in the plasma cloud.

Wow!

Wouldn't it be ironic if we discovered that really was a form of life, after all the silly renditions of cloud-creatures in SF?
