Pimp Your Stuff with lindalee

I've been seeing more "pimp your stuff" posts, like this pimp post on lindalee.  It's a chance for a given audience to share news about what goods or services they have for sale.

What do folks think?  Is this kind of thing a good idea, or does it depend on context, or what?

This seems perfectly ok to me. I'm perfectly happy to pimp a CD that has a cover of one of my songs, or a book that I have a chapter in.

I also feel that it's ok to pimp a friend's work, which isn't much of a step away from that.

That particular pimp post seemed to encourage things like Etsy and other second-party places. It varies. I'm generally okay with it -- it's the creator or the work that really interests me, more than the location.

I think they are a good idea. As an artist, it's hard to get your site out to people who might find it interesting. As a buyer, I want to support people who I know first off if I can. And it's hard enough to find reputable sites for gift ideas if you've got a certain set of boundaries for your recipient so those kinds of posts are great for that.

But my question is when I see links to those posts is it ok for me to chime in and put my links up or should I instead start a post like it of my own?

Oh, that's a good point -- they are great for shopping. I know some of my friends have bought off sites that I've pimped here.

I think it varies. If you see a pimp post, you can put your link as a reply to it. If somebody links to one, maybe you can, maybe not. Me, I'm generally okay with on-topic replies and I figure that "here's my stuff" replies to "there's a pimp post over there" is legit. One drawback to links and restarts is that you wind up scattering the material. If you put your link on the original post as a reply, and then just link to that page, it keeps more stuff in the same place. Though if it's already massive, spreading might be more desirable.
I generally think they are a good idea. I'm all for spreading the word, especially if they are 'secondhand friends,' people that are good friends with people on my flist. It's a bonus if they become friends of mine, and then I not only get to 'pimp my stuff,' I also get to meet nifty new people. :D
That's a good thought about making new friends. I've used pimp posts for that purpose too.
It's one of the most fun things about the pimp posts, to me. Seeing awesome things made by wonderfully creative people, being able to pop in and say "hey, wow, very cool!" or "oh, I love [thing] too!" and spring off a conversation from there. :D
For me, it's all a question of frequency.

Pimping your own products or someone else's several times a month? Fine by me.

Pimping your own products or someone else's several times a week? I'll scroll past those entries without a second glance.

Of course, YMMV.
That makes sense. I have penciled in "Pimp Your Stuff" dates in blank spots on my calendar, once a month.
I'm in favor of (reasonable) self-promotion.

On the other hand, I am not especially comfortable calling that "pimping", with the connotations of sexual slavery and misogyny "pimping" includes by virtue of its origins.

I agree with that complaint. Unfortunately "pimp your stuff" etc. is the usage widespread in the blogosphere. I haven't been able to find an alternative that is as concise and widely recognized.
Yeah, I know. *sigh*
