In which I really am linguistic SillyPutty...

We went shopping the other day.  I walked past a cardboard display for the movie "Avatar."  I glanced at the picture of the flying mount ... and the word that popped into my head was ikran,  not banshee.  I've started to pick up bits of Na'vi just from reading articles, seeing the movie once, and reading a book I got for my birthday.  No serious study; words just stick to me.

Besides, it's a cool language.

My daughter got into the Avatar role-playing group in second life. Bunch of Germans, Russians, Mexicans and who knows what else ... all chatting away in Na'vi. She even composed a lexicon for them, and since teh published works tend to be shy a few important words, she started inventing compound words to fill the gaps.
That is so cool. It's an example of how ingenious people are with language. We don't need much to get started. Not all the created words have been released, apparently, and fans have clamored for more.

Really, if you're going to invent a language for a movie -- more than just the few words IN the dialog -- then you might as well knock off a short printing of your materials for the conlang crowd. If the movie goes blockbuster, then all you have to do is reprint what you already have, for the expanded demand.
