I enjoyed this post about building a very small house.  Not everyone needs large amounts of living space.

I live in a verysmallspace inside a larger house. I've thought about moving into something larger and until I *have* to to make space for the kids to come visit, I won't.

That's another very practical way to live. If you're not already on householding then I recommend it.
