Poem: "Digging for Roots"

This poem came out of the March 2, 2010 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by prompts from siege and jenny_evergreen.  It was selected in the generally sponsored poetry poll.  *laugh*  EVERY choice this time had 2 votes last night when I checked!  I guess the audience liked all the options this time.  This morning, "Digging for Roots" had a third vote, so here it is.

Digging for Roots

Where Air meets Earth,
there you will find the linguists
digging for roots.

Somewhere between speech and bone,
between breath and dust,
must lie the innermost motes of language.

Somewhere in there must be
the concrete nouns and the verb roots
that are not merely cultural but elemental.

Those, in there, in us,
will be the primal components of thought
from which all minds and all matters are made.

Then it will only remain
for someone to arrange them
into a periodic table of elemental ideas

somehow incorporating
the periods, groups, blocks, and categories
of universal grammar.
