therebirthofme for the new concept sketch, now incorporating a heart coconut and a pregnant belly globe. There is a donation button on the page to support this project. Donors will receive an ACEO sized (2.5"x3.5", about the size of a playing card) print of the painting. I'm really broke right now, but I chipped in a bit for this project. Can you?
I am so excited to see this starting to come together! It's not just an ordinary painting ... it is turning into a synthesis of people's compassion and creativity. There was this horrible earthquake in Haiti, and now we are coming together to help. We are thinking about what makes Haiti a special place, what it means to us, and putting those images into this painting. We are thinking about what makes people strong, and loving, and caring ... putting those images into this painting. So it's becoming a kind of cultural monument that embodies this moment in time, the disaster, our response to it, all taken inside the artist and alloyed together to create this painting. Wow.
I would love to see more of this in crowdfunding. Maybe for charity, maybe for some other purpose. It's the collective response to a major cultural event, and the synthesis of that into art, that is fascinating me. Sometimes a thing happens, and there's this deluge of political cartoons and other art in response to it. This is akin to that, but taking input from a lot of different people, who aren't all artists themselves but are channeling their ideas through an artist by supporting her work. It reminds me a little bit of quilting, where sometimes women would get together and each bring a square they made to make a quilt as a memento. Something old, something new.
I can hardly wait to see this painting develop! More updates will be forthcoming.

I'd like to see this painting finished. Clearly support is still needed; recovery efforts in Haiti are straggling along, and not getting as much attention as the original earthquake did.
