Father's Prayer (Christmas 2009)
Father's Prayer (Christmas 2009)

"God, I hope I do this right."

I saw this on [info]haikujaguar's site this morning, and I love it. I think this image totally captures the daunting wonder of fatherhood. It speaks to my masculine nature, so I wanted to share it with other folks. I encourage you to show this to the father(s) in your life.

As we grow, our needs change.  Sometimes that means our goals need to change too.  [info]haikujaguar offers a lovely post about this life lesson.

I like chip carving, and these are lovely.  Over my altar there is a chip carved plate with a unicorn and a star on it.

This is the cute monster that [info]buymelove drew for me as part of Free Monster Day.  If you go back to the original post you can see links to many other monsters; they're delightfully wicked creations.

Eeek, a monster! )

Thanks to [info]haikujaguar for this meme, listing the art on your walls.  I'm going to do my office.

West wall is my accomplishments: college diploma and tassel, Sol Magazine Poet Laureate 2003 certificate.  (I had more, but had to take them down to make room for the hutch on the desk.)  There's also a vividly colored braided tapestry the size of a small throw rug, artist unknown.

North wall is pictures that remind me of my characters.  There's a girl with her cat familiar by Susan Van Camp, a dragon in sepia pencil by a family friend (I showed her one of my high school stories, and she came back with the sketch because it matched the story perfectly), another girl by Mark ... I forget his last name.

East wall is friends' art: "Tane" and "Thy Seal to My Heart" my [info]haikujaguar and a carved wooden plate of a unicorn, artist unknown.

South wall is mostly covered by books, but I did cover the window with a cheap tapestry of a unicorn, artist unknown.

We have much other art in the rest of the house, by artists famous and not famous and unknown.  Some is framed, some not.

I need to remember to check [info]freestuffday more often.  Fortunately I caught this cool post in time; there will be a free monster party tomorrow in which you can request a sketch of a cute monster shouting a phrase.  I want one holding a wringer or a meat grinder, saying "Insert character here ->"

For those of you wondering what my scrapbooked poetry looks like, here are a few samples.  (Someone tipped me to this page of holiday art pimpage.)  I do these as gifts and for sale, sometimes also as contest prizes. Each page is unique.  Some of the pictures aren't perfect but you should be able to get an idea of what I'm doing.  These papercrafts usually cost $5-10 per page, depending on how expensive the materials are and how long they take to make.
  See the pictures! )

Museum version with square cupcakes.
Different version with round cupcakes.

So cupcake cakes can too  be cool.  What would be really awesome is to match the number of elements in one (or more) section to the number of candles required for a birthday.

The Winterfaire spreads out as far as the eye can see. Some booths show streamers of red and green, while others sport blue and silver. All of them offer treasure after shining treasure. Music fills the air with lyrics of Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, and Yule. From the Wordsmith's Forge comes the bright chiming of words being hammered into literature. Delicious scents of hot chocolate, spiced cider, peppermint, baking cookies, and gingerbread tantalize the appetite. Smiling, laughing shoppers amble from booth to booth with lists in hand. Vendors grin back, calling out, "Come try, come buy...!"

I know a lot of artists, writers, musicians, and other talented folks who make some of their living from their creative endeavors. I don't always have the money to support them as much as I'd like, but what I can do is set up a virtual faire where vendors can offer their wares to an audience that likes crafts, literature, and small businesses. For those of you doing your holiday shopping, here's an opportunity to buy something made with love, something unusual or unique, in a way that helps make it possible for creative people to go on creating wonders. And there will be no traffic jams, stampedes, or gunfights at the Winterfaire!

Vendors: If you have goods or services suitable for holiday gifts, please put up a booth by replying with a description of what you sell, an estimate of your price range if possible, and some kind of contact information so shoppers can reach you. For ease of identification, I recommend titling your reply starting with "BOOTH:" followed by the name of your business or type of goodies.

Shoppers: If you're looking for something specific and it's not posted yet, feel free to ask. Someone else may know where to find it! "SHOPPING FOR:" and the topic would be a good title.

You Are a Drawing
You appreciate things that are simple and elegant.
You believe that complexity is mostly used to mask flaws.
You believe that art is about leaving more to the imagination.
The best art isn't overly showy or flashy. It is subtly beautiful.

Take the quiz.

Doug tipped me to this webcomic, Nicky510. It's somewhere between Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes.

I love art that uses the natural qualities of a medium to create something interesting. These tree spirits are carved into trees.

I was charmed by these lovely wooden thrones, the kind you see in the SCA (note the maker is from California). Also new on the woodworking blog is this set of scrollwork cats. Those spiky bits unsupported by other wood are very difficult to make without breaking off.

This poem came out of the November 3, 2009 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [info]tonithegreat and sponsored out of general donations thanks to the poll. Petroglyphs appear around the world and have many different meanings and purposes.

Carved in Stone

People spend hours
pecking out petroglyphs in the desert,
leaving them on the high red rocks
as signposts saying,
“This way to water!” and
“This way to enlightenment.”

Grumbling, the wind
comes with a fistful of sand
to erase them.
