Northern Flicker
Today I saw a northern flicker on the ground under the hopper feeder.  We used to have a lot of these.  They have since been largely replaced by red-bellied woodpeckers.  Read more about the woodpeckers of Illinois.

I had a female Cooper's hawk sitting on the backyard fence and eating a pigeon yesterday. I live in a very urban neighborhood of Chicago, with the L train on the other side of the alley, but that didn't seem to matter. She seemed comfortable and confident. Go birds!
