Poem: "The Hungry Gods"

This is today's second freebie, inspired by  aldersprig.  The form is a variant of indriso.  The black gods of space belong to my science fantasy setting.

The Hungry Gods
-- an indriso in internal diastole

They say the gods of space are hungry gods.

They swallow starships whole and spit the seeds
Across the floor of night in careless ways,
But reft of flight, how sorely man's heart bleeds!

Bow down before the black gods -- chant their praise --
And make obeisance, for you know your needs
Who craves war's chancy night beyond all days.

So launch, and let them choke upon the odds!

ooh. I like this. I like the way the meter seems to beat a drum; it brings to mind dark seas.

Thank you!

The indriso form is a condensed sonnet. Therefore, it uses the same iambic pentameter (da DA da DA ...) which is the most natural rhythm for the English language, and does indeed have a "drumbeat" or "ocean wave" resonance to it. In my mind it has a kind of rolling grandeur. I like to bring it out for momentous topics.

Re: Thank you!

It definitely works. Then again, I'm fond of Iambic.

I am not certain if it's your sort of thing, but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3w2MTXBebg Epic Rap Battles of History's Dr. Seuss v. Shakespeare comes to mind when discussing meter.
