What Revision Is Like
I've spent the last several days working on revisions for "Pebbles from the River Lethe." For those of you not familiar with what revision is like, the steps go something like this...

1) Open wringer.
2) Insert brain.
3) Latch wringer.
4) Crank vigorously.
5) Type up the results.

It's not fun, but it does improve the writing.

Hmmmm, I thought that experience was Math Test.

Not for me. Math Test never yielded lasting results, even with the three hours of studying per night that it took to scrape through. What math knack I have slowly blossoming is thanks to about 20 years in the company of characters who have that.

Grin. You too, huh?

Revision is rarely easy. Some stories are harder than others. This one is...

1) probably the second-longest piece of fiction I have finished, and possibly the longest I've put into revision.
2) complicated to begin with.
3) wrapped around some crucial structural elements that make condensing, expanding, or moving pieces extra challenging.
4) intense.
5) based on a viewpoint character whose mind is in shreds.

Yep, sounds like a doozy.

My only advice would be:
1) Keep awesome and coherant notes
2) Break it up into managable bits so the length isn't so daunting!

My first drafts are a mess because I tend to think on the page. Rewriting is a challenge but an interesting and creative one, I think -- a chance to up the suspense, further develop characters, improve dialog, insert humor... to learn from my mistakes. The biggest lesson? Selecting projects worth going back to again and again.

Yeah, that sounds about right. :)
